The statement follows a claim from Libyan officials last week that a consignment of arms from Turkey, containing 3,000 Turkish-made pistols, as well as some other pistols, hunting rifles and ammunition, was seized at a port near Tripoli airport.

Ankara has rejected the claim , which it says “do not represent the policy or approach of the Turkish state.”

One day before the incident, a cargo of 2.5 million Turkish-made bullets was seized at the same port, according to the the Jerusalem Post.

Transporting weapons to Libya is banned under a United Nations arms embargo imposed in 2011, the year civil war broke out in the country.

The Libyan military spokesman on Saturday again reiterated accusations against Turkey of jeopardizing the security and stability of Libya in a press conference in Benghazi on Thursday, Asharq al-Awsat reported.

Libya and Turkey have agreed to open a joint investigation into the claims, following a meeting earlier this month between in Tripoli between Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavuşoğlu.

Seven years after the 2011 uprising that ended the 42-year rule and life of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the country is currently engaged in a civil war and run by two rival administrations, one centered in the capital Tripoli and the other in eastern city of Tobruk.
