Kyrenia Refugees Association letter to the USA and the EU: In the name of justice we ask for equal treatment for Cyprus
ΑΚ20/2023 13.3. 2023
Excellencies,
Ursula von der Leyen
President of the European Commission
And
Charles Michel
President of the European Council
Your Excellencies,
European policies which compromise sovereign rights of Cyprus, Human Rights of the people of Cyprus and the rule of International Law
Ιin the light of the war in Ukraine, we note the active European involvement, militarily and Diplomatically against Russia and we feel insulted by it. We note statements made by the European Union declaring support to the sovereignty of countries, International Law and Order, strongly condemning the violation of Human Rights, etc. etc.
We feel insulted because, we also are victims of foreign military invasion for 49 years, living our horrifying plight in a «deafening» European Diplomatic silence which is supportive of the Turkish invader and his partitionist acts. None oh the above sensitivity has been shown in the case of Cyprus.
We draw your attention to the Cyprus case.
- A case of foreign military aggression by a NATO country, with close European ties.
- A brutal military invasion which Europe did not try to prevent,
- Occupation followed by serial war crimes committed against the people of Cyprus, for which Europe has not shown any regrets or even remorse. On the contrary Turkey is for years now, being appeased and enjoys active Diplomatic justifying for its illegal actions in Cyprus.
The European Diplomatic support for Turkey continuous over the years by exercising pressure on Cyprus with one persisting goal: Cyprus to accept the current DE FACTO situation and legalize it as DE YURE, in the form of Bizonal Bicommunal (con) Federation. The UNION overlooks the International Law violations that took place in Cyprus
Zero call for terminating the Turkish occupation. Zero call for restoring the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Cyprus Republic. Zero call for the return and reinstatement of the displaced and refugees of Cyprus, back in their Ancestral Homes. Zero call for Turkey to be punished/sanctioned in any way for the crimes of invasion, occupation, war crimes and gross Human Rights violations. There are more «zeros» on the UNION’s part which can be mentioned: Visiting European representatives never see or speak to displaced people of Cyprus and hear what they have to say.
We also, kindly ask you to consider the following facts:
- The war in Ukraine is not the first European war since WWII. The invasion of Cyprus in 1974 was the first
- The 6000 dead after one month of war in Cyprus, during the Turkish invasion, was more as a percentage of the population than the dead in Ukraine in one year of war.
- The Humanitarian issue of 200000 (33% of the population) displaced and refugees in Cyprus, as a percentage of the population is much greater than what it is in Ukraine.
- The 1619 prisoners of war, soldiers, citizens old, young, children, men, women who never came back. For some of them the remains were found in mass graves with bullet holes on their foreheads
In view of the above and in the name of justice we demand similar sensitivity and equal treatment by the European Union. This is the only way for us, as European citizens to take the UNION seriously. The place where EU values are upheld, where EU freedom is defended, where the future of Europe is written should be in every European country and not only in Ukraine.
We shall also appreciate a meeting with your Excellencies in order to analyse our views in person. A meeting will be mutually beneficial and please consider this as an official request.
We also ask you to circulate our letter to all the Commission and Council members
Sincerely
For the Kyrenia Refugees Association

Your Excellency,
USA policies which compromise sovereign rights of Cyprus, Human Rights of the people of Cyprus and the rule of International Law
Ιin the light of the war in Ukraine, we note the active American involvement, militarily and Diplomatically against Russia and we feel insulted by it. We note statements made by American Government Officials declaring support to the sovereignty of countries, International Law and Order, strongly condemning the violation of Human Rights, etc. etc.
We feel insulted because, we also are victims of foreign military invasion for 49 years, living our horrifying plight in a «deafening» Diplomatic silence which is supportive of the Turkish invader and his partitionist acts.
We draw your attention to the Cyprus case.
- A case of foreign military aggression by a NATO country, close ally of America, using American arms.
- A brutal military invasion which America did not try to prevent,
- Occupation followed by serial war crimes committed against the people of Cyprus, for which America has not shown any regrets or even remorse. On the contrary Turkey had, at the time of the invasion, active Diplomatic justifying and strategic support for tis illegal and criminal actions against a small country like Cyprus.
The American Diplomatic support for Turkey continued over the years that followed, with Diplomatic manipulations for one persisting goal: Our acceptance of the current DE FACTO situation and its legalization as DE YURE, in the form of Bizonal Bicommunal (con) Federation
Zero call for terminating the Turkish occupation. Zero call for restoring the independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Cyprus Republic. Zero call for the return and reinstatement of the displaced and refugees of Cyprus, back in their Ancestral Homes.
We also, kindly ask you to consider the following facts:

- The Humanitarian issue of 200000 (33% of the population) displaced and refugees in Cyprus, as a percentage of the population is much greater than what it is in Ukraine.
In view of the above and in the name of justice we ask for equal treatment by the Government of America.
Please convey our views to the American Government.
We shall also appreciate a meeting with your Excellency in order to analyse our views in person. A meeting will be mutually beneficial.
