A Greek emergency rescue team (EMAK) on Wednesday rescued a young woman, Irin, from the ruins of a building in Hatay that collapsed after a major earthquake in southeastern Türkiye.

Originally the team members thought the calls for help were coming from a young boy trapped under his dead mother. The boy was found dead, and the young woman was further in the rubble, trapped by a concrete block. The rescue operation had to be briefly interrupted when two aftershocks occurred.

Irin’s rescue took over six hours, with the rescue members holding her hand to reassure her. She was picked up by an ambulance.

Southeast Türkiye and Syria were struck by a powerful earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale on Monday, followed by an aftershock of 7.5. So far, over 11,200 have been confirmed dead in both countries, with the death toll rising continuously and the United Nations expressing fears the death toll will rise to at least 20,000.
